SXSW (South by Southwest) is a giant music and arts conference held in Austin, Texas. It's split into three different parts: music/media, interactive, and film. Each part has conferences you can attend and a festival showcasing artists from all around the globe. Since it's an artistic development conference by day, party by night, expect to pay dearly for your passes. The music festival is an excellent place to find bands who are right there on the forefront. If (like me) you are not fortunate enough to make it down to Austin, be on the lookout for some of these artists to be touring past, or perhaps keep them in mind when snooping around for a new album. The list of performers is QUITE long and inclusive.

Coachella

One of today's most popular festivals, coachella touts many sought after headliners, while showcasing the hottest new artists. They do have onsite camping for a hefty extra charge. The rules at coachella are a little stricter than most festivals, but nothing too unreasonable. Just be sure to check them out if it's your first time. Camping out in the beautiful desert sure sounds wonderful, just remember the temperature there in april may be quite warm in the day and quite cold at night.

Hookahville

Thrown by ekoostik hookah twice a year, Hookahville is a rowdy jam festival not always held in the same spot. Surprisingly seedy, but somehow cozy. Pack a light camp, the parking is separated (and usually kind of far) from the camping area, and if you show up on the first day, you'll get tired of holding all of your gear in the 4 hour line to get in! Open flames are allowed, so flickering campfires and candles mingle with glowsticks to give the place a very beautiful late night atmosphere.

Hot, dusty, muddy, and by far my favorite. Lots of cool, diverse people, big headliners and (most importantly) lots of the best obscure local/regional acts from all around. There's music from any genre to be found, just remember that the festival is HUGE so the crowds can be overwhelming and the shakedown shady. Those who are carless or carpool inclined check the ride finder in the community part of the their website. Bring shoes (not just sandals) for the mud near overflowing portapots and horse shit. Bring bottled water.
